Severfield achieves ISO 19443:2018 certification, elevating standards in the nuclear sector

Severfield continues to set the bar high for nuclear standards as it becomes the 12th company in the UK to achieve a highly regarded nuclear accreditation.

We were recently awarded the ISO 19443:2018 certification, making us only the 12th company in the UK to achieve this certification. This standard sets strict requirements for quality management systems within nuclear environments, ensuring compliance with applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.

Steve Clyne, our Head of Nuclear Quality, stated, "This certification is a testament to the dedication and expertise of our team. Achieving ISO 19443:2018 in just six months, compared to the typical year-long process, reflects our commitment to efficiency and excellence."

Our achievement of this certification positions us as a standout among UK businesses, with only twelve companies currently holding this accreditation. This milestone opens new doors for us as a Tier-1 supplier in the nuclear field, paving the way for expanded opportunities in the UK and across Europe.

In addition to securing new nuclear projects, ISO 19443:2018 will further enhance the work we do in nuclear decommissioning. As a Key Delivery Partner (KDP) at Sellafield on the PPP framework over the next 17 years, we will share the learnings and processes we have developed with our fellow KDPs, improving the PPP and the wider industry through collaboration and knowledge sharing.

The Sellafield Programme and Project Partners (PPP) is a 20-year partnership created to drive collaboration and change how major projects are delivered at Sellafield. As a key partner, we, along with the other KDPs, will play a vital role in ensuring that the projects needed to manage legacy nuclear waste are built on time, within budget, and right the first time.

Stuart Mitchell, our Divisional Pre-Construction Director for the Severfield Nuclear and Infrastructure division, remarked, “Severfield has been ever present in construction within the nuclear sector for over 40 years. In this time, requirements and specifications have changed, but our approach to quality has not. The achievement of ISO19443:2018 is testament to the exacting standards of quality assurance and quality control that we apply to all our contracts, especially those in nuclear and defense. The achievement of this standard sends out a clear message to our existing and prospective clients that we are well prepared for large-scale nuclear new build programmes.”

We achieved this certification in the same year that we extended our Fit4Nuclear certification, which now includes two additional facilities. The Fit4Nuclear initiative was introduced by the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (Nuclear AMRC) in collaboration with industry experts and nuclear industry leaders. It aims to ensure that suppliers engaged in the nuclear sector adhere to the highest quality, safety, and efficiency standards.

Our continued recognition for our capabilities and commitment to quality in the nuclear sector demonstrates our position as a trusted partner in the nuclear industry.
