The BEPPS1/DIF (Box Encapsulation Plant and Product Storage/Direct Import Facility) at Sellafield was built to receive and store intermediate level waste (ILW) from high hazard plants, Pile Fuel Cladding Silos (PFCS) and Magnox Swarf Storage Silos (MSSS).

Severfield were contracted by Kier to provide connection design, detailing, manufacture and installation of over 800 tonnes of main steel and 400 tonnes of secondary steel to both EX2 and EX3. The scope also included on-site and off-site application of intumescent coatings.

Construction began in 2016 with the external frame of the Direct Import Facility (DIF) and East End Annex (EEA). Following completion of external works, Severfield worked closely with Kier to install numerous internal secondary steel packages including vault plates for the product boxes to be stored on, crane beams and access platforms.

Close co-ordination between both the client and contractor was key to the successful delivery of this project. It is always a challenge to undertake projects within nuclear sites because of the inherent safety hazards, but Severfield persistently carries out the projects in a safe and professional manner.
