Severfield were engaged by Costain to manufacture and erect over 1,100 tonnes of structural steel for Sellafield's Evaporator D project. The scope of work included metal decking and cladding, in addition to the application of intumescent coatings off-site and on-site.

The Evaporator D project is designed to treat Highly Active Liquor (HAL) before being sent for vitrification. Once fully operational, this will allow the decommissioning of two older evaporators. Evaporator D is also the only evaporator to handle high-level liquid waste created during the disposal of Sellafield’s reprocessing plants, therefore, this project was imperative in order to ensure the safe reprocessing of HAL.

As part of the scope, Severfield were also asked to design and manufacture several Temporary Construction Access Opening (TCAO) covers.

Severfield worked closely with Costain and our suppliers to develop a tarpaulin style curtain to cover the TCAO before and after modular cell installation, and were awarded the NDA SME supply chain award for innovation for the covers in 2013.

This project represents Severfield's adaptability to meet additional requirements when needed, all while doing so to our best ability, achieving awards along the way.
