Severfield is proud to announce its involvement in the Riverside 2 Energy from Waste (EfW) facility, marking our return to the EfW market. This state-of-the-art facility will be one of the largest and most efficient EfW plants in the UK, designed to process c. 650,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste annually. The energy generated will be sufficient to power the equivalent of around 176,000 homes each year. Rated with a BREEAM Good classification, Riverside 2 exemplifies our commitment to sustainable construction practices.

Severfield's scope includes the complete connection design of the structural frame and various cold-formed design products (CDP), such as a small cold-rolled system, steel stairs, cat ladders, open grid flooring, and permanent handrail elements. The project will see the installation of 1,750 tonnes of hot-rolled steel and 7 tonnes of cold-rolled steel, along with 2,700 m² of metal decking, 362 m² of open grid flooring, 823 m of handrailing, and 9 cat ladders.
The construction is divided into several phases, including the waste bunker, admin goods lift, admin building, tipping hall, and ash bunker. The overall site programme spans 56 weeks, commencing on March 28, 2024, and reaching practical completion in late April 2025. Notably, the programme includes intermittent breaks throughout the build, necessitating careful planning and management.
A variety of plant equipment will be utilised, with crane capacities ranging from 130 tonnes to 750 tonnes. Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWPs) will typically be 125 feet tall, with the admin goods lift and waste bunker requiring 185 feet MEWPs. Erection will begin with the waste bunker hopper deck, progressing to the remaining waste bunker areas while simultaneously constructing the admin and goods lift. The tipping hall structure is set to commence in late October 2024, with the ash bunker following in March 2025.
The Riverside 2 project not only underscores Severfield’s capabilities in large-scale infrastructure but also showcases our dedication to delivering high-quality, sustainable solutions for the future. We look forward to the successful completion of this landmark project and its positive impact on the community and environment.
