Severfield helped build new sound stages and production facilities, forming a new state-of-the-art expansion of the film studio complex in Shepperton, Surrey, for Pinewood Group, the leading provider of studio and related services to the global film and television industry. The new complex comprised 14 sound stages, four multi-storey office blocks, a uniquely designed entrance pavilion with a 30m over-road feature canopy, and various utility and workshop buildings and car parks.
This project required the construction of several buildings simultaneously, the process of which had to utilise six mobile cranes. Therefore, site logistics were of the utmost importance. With up to 55 loads being delivered per week, it was essential that Severfield kept to a tight schedule to avoid delays.
For the sound stages, on the one hand, steel trusses were delivered to the site in comparatively small pieces. These pieces were assembled at ground level into three large sections, all of which were lifted into place and spliced in the air. In total, 34 trusses measuring 4.5m in width were assembled in the factory and transported to the site as abnormal loads – this required extensive planning and the removal of some street furniture along the agreed delivery routes.
On the other hand, the offices are predominantly formed using a beam and a column, with a mezzanine, three floors, and a roof. Along the spine of level one of each office is a series of large 18m transfer trusses weighing approximately 16 tonnes.
Moreover, upon entering the complex, all visitors will encounter the impressive, curved entrance pavilion and canopy that spans the 30m carriageway.
